July 20 - July 28, 2013
Buy Local Week has Begun!

If you have not visited your local farmer's market this season . . . Now is the time! Buy Local Week!

Did you know?: "Buying from farmers markets allows residents to directly support local farmers. If each Maryland household purchased $12 worth of produce every week from a farmers market for 8 weeks, $229,569,600 could go directly to the local farmers." (Greenbelt Patch, July 21, 2013)

Did you know?:   Included in Farmers Markets Today magazine, "more than 85% of farmers market vendors traveled fewer than 50 miles to sell at a farmers market in 2008.  In fact, more than half of farmers traveled less than 10 miles to their market, according to a 2006 USDA survey.  Some farmers markets require that all of their produce come from a specified mileage limit. For example, all farm products sold at the Morgantown Farmers Market in WV are grown within 50 miles. Compare that to other scenarios where seven to fourteen days can go by between the time produce is picked and when it becomes available at a supermarket. In that interval, fruits and vegetables can travel, on average, more than 1,200 miles before reaching the final consumer. Since studies have shown that produce loses nutritional value as more time elapses from the time of harvest, locally grown produce available at farmers markets is available to you at the peak of freshness and nutrient availability. Don't forget to take the challenge and eat at least ONE food item (vegetable/fruit) from a local farmer. Remember: if your nearby grocer features "locally grown" produce, you may want to check and determine if the farm is actually a local one and if the producer is located in the region in which you live.

Of course, if you find yourself visiting National Harbor or driving around the beltway on Saturday, July 27, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. our farmers and artisans at American Market welcome you with open arms!
