If you are one of those delightful folks who enjoys a GREAT deal, well, the Sherlock is just the ticket! Boy, I have been reading a lot of ads . . . I'm beginning to sound and write like some of those " creative" marketing professionals! My, how the people influence us. Well, as always, I am supporting other folks and presenting this alternative method of shopping for folks who love bargains, name brand products, or simply do not have the gumption or the time to walk the mall or marketplace.

Thanksgiving, birthdays, Christmas, the New Year, Valentine's Day events are on our heels! And I have a ton of resources . . . Shopping Sherlock, local and national clothing, accessory, home products designers and more for your gift needs. So, here's what I will do. Shopping Sherlock will be the first introduction and the local artisans and designers will follow. Once again, Vikki is one of the folks that submitted an article for OrganicMind Magazine.

Residual Income: What It Is and Why You Need It
By Vikki Brooks, Esq.

Like many African Americans, particularly those of us who are boomers, what I learned about money growing up and even after adulthood, was minuscule.  My parents led by example:  you work (often for poor wages), you saved, you bought a house. Of course, they wanted my life to be better.  Better for them was to get an education, become a professional, work at a better job for better wages, buy a house and live a middle class life.  That was about the extent of my financial education. Oh, growing up I saw that some people owned property that they rented out, but those were the exceptions. Much later I learned the difference between making money and building wealth.  But, like many of us, wealth was this elusive creature that always managed to stay just beyond reach. Sometimes I built up a little savings, but some emergency always came along to put me back where I started. So, I concentrated on trying to achieve a good income by selling my time and knowledge to a variety of clients for as much as I could.  Even as my consulting practice grew, I was still locked into the cycle defined by my parents:  if I did not work, I did not earn.  Later, I learned that this most common form of money making had a name – linear compensation.  Even when I tried to get ahead by doing work “on the side” the principle still held:  no work, no pay.  I still could not figure out the most accessible way to build wealth – the way to make my assets work for me instead of the reverse.

Much, much later was I introduced to the concept of residual income. Residual income, sometimes called recurring or passive income, is money that continues to flow after the first investment of time and/or resources.  In sum, a residual income stream will earn you money even when you’re not on the clock.  This was at the heart of wealth-building. For any independent business owner, it is critical to generate many different streams of income – some to pay for the here-and-now, and some to build for the future. There are many ways to earn residual income:  owning rental units, collecting royalties, publishing and selling an e-book, or investing in a savings and investment program, among others.  Well, given that my disposable cash and resources were slim, and sometimes nonexistent as I waited for clients to pay on invoices, none of these options was available to me.  I had to find something that I could do that required a very small investment and not a lot of time.

Despite my circumstances, I put my mind toward finding a realistic option.There were some requirements:

1) I didn’t want to use up my paid consulting time to sell a product – besides, I wasn’t really a salesperson;
2) the initial and ongoing investment of cash had to be very small;
3) I had to believe in the company and the integrity of its leaders; and,
4) there had to be some kind of training/education or support – I didn’t want to be out there on my own.

Well, I found programs that met some but not all of my criteria. I also found that a lot of the work was done online and through social media, a realm with which I was just barely familiar. After several months of searching the Internet, talking to friends who were in business, reading scare stories about rip-offs; and reading business journals, I finally found a vehicle that met all four of my criteria.

That opportunity was  . . .

A portal used by online shoppers to find products, find the best prices, get alerts on deals, coupons, and money back specials. All these benefits are accessed using a safe, free app that I that I could download to either my computer or phone. I was introduced to it by my close friend, Joanne.  I downloaded the app and started using Sherlock to save on all my personal and business shopping.  I used it for about a year, before my attention once again focused on the issue of residual income.  All during this time, I was growing more and more tired of having to take jobs and not being financially able to pick and choose my projects.  So, finally, I took the plunge and became a Shopping Sherlock Affiliate. (The investment was less than $250.) As an Affiliate, I was allowed to give away as many apps as I wanted – all for free!  Everybody I knew liked saving money when they shopped and nearly everybody shopped online or went online to compare prices. So, the app was something they wanted.  They especially liked that Sherlock had thousands of participating retailers, including Amazon.  Each time they shopped and bought something, the retailer paid me a commission.  Even better – my friends could just use Sherlock to browse and check prices and I still got money!  Retailers paid me because it was less expensive than hiring an entire marketing force to deal with the boom in e-commerce (i.e., online shopping).  Everyone came out a winner.  I liked that.

I kept giving away the app and learning more and more about the company and its president.  I learned he was a leader and visionary in the whole Internet, e-commerce, e-start-up industry and had a sterling reputation.  I tried searching for bad things about him and couldn’t find any.  In addition, I got to participate in webinars, team conference calls, and technical support – anything I needed to succeed.  Even more important, I could use my Sherlock page to advertise my own business and link Sherlock to my website.  (I haven’t done that because I decided I want to reduce my consulting time and concentrate more on Sherlock.  That was a surprise!)  I sent emails to my friends and colleagues with the link to the app and gave out Sherlock post cards wherever I went.  Very quickly, Sherlock began paying for itself and I began earning commissions.  True, at the beginning, this all required some commitment of time, but the pay-off came quickly.  I started having weekly conference calls with my team members and learned that some of them were using the Sherlock income to support their nonprofit, their ministry, to build a scholarship fund, and for other purposes. (Of course, some, like me, were using this wonderful opportunity for personal income.)

I would not hesitate to recommend this vehicle to anyone who wishes to generate residual income by giving away a product everybody wants. And, of course, if it doesn’t suit you, you can close your account with no penalty.  (But I don’t think you’ll do that.)
